My first fashion post! And its not “just” fashion… its PLUS SIZE FASHION! Now, it is no secret that I have a curvy body that requires plus-size clothing and it is quite evident in all my pictures. My body has transformed from being thin to plus-size after giving birth to wonderful 3 kids (yes, I am a mommy of 3). I used to be really thin before I had babies and sometimes people still tell me ‘Oh, you used to be so pretty & perfect when you were thin… It’s such a shame you’ve put on weight’… It really makes me wonder, how do people define “perfect” & “pretty”?
I feel the definition of a perfect and pretty woman, wife & mommy always includes being tall and thin. Basically the opposite of me!! I always felt that I didn’t fit into this at all, but then I realized that the problem was not me – but the messages being thrust upon all of us from different people in different ways, gestures & comments.
Perfect pretty women are happy women, kind women, confident women and women who believe and share the reality that beauty is not reserved for a specific look, size, race or style. Re-defining “perfect pretty woman” for yourself is the most liberating thing you could do in your self-love journey. Fashion and makeup can be enjoyed by all the lovely women out there, in all shapes, sizes, race or style. I’m looking forward to the day where more campaigns, more movies, shows and ads include girls and boys of all shapes, backgrounds + sizes and nurture a wave of girls and boys who will know with confidence that, they too, are pretty.
Enough about size, let’s talk about this look! After all this is a fashion post not a complain-about-beauty-standards-post 😉
So, it is still really hot in Mumbai right now, even though it usually cools down in November and I got into a bit of a boho vibe and put this look together. A boho outfit is typically characterised by flowy clothes (see my top), lots of prints (enter jacket), combined textures and patterns, big accessories (such as the necklace) or a combination of a lot of small accessories (like the rings) and it basically looks like you just walked off the beach (hence the strappy sandals and sun hat). That’s about the best I can do explaining, haha. Got it? If not, just type ‘boho look’ in Pinterest and you’ll get the idea.
So here are some tips on how to make this look work, when you wear a plus size, like me. I went with a full length skinny jeans, the longer your jeans, the taller and hence slimmer you look, it’s all about creating that optical illusion! Then I used the jacket to create another layer of “length” in this look and it also helps covering up the hips and bum area from behind, you know, those rolls that sometimes tend to be over visible…
I left my hair down which created the third layer of “length” and again helps me look taller and therefore thinner, if you’re a plus size like me, I’d recommend you grow your hair long, it really helps.
Also, do you see those lovely waves in my hair? I used a super simple trick to create it. And when I say super simple, I really mean SUPER SIMPLE! You need just 3 things: a blow dryer, hair mousse and hard spray.
- Step 1: Make sure your hair is dry and fairly tangle-free. Apply a handful of mousse (about the size of a small apple) over your entire hair.
- Step 2: braid your hair in 1 or 2 simple plats or ask your friend/mother/sister to do it for you. It doesn’t have to be neat, you’re going to open it anyways.
- Step 3: Use a blowdryer close to the skull/braid to heat the hair from the top till the bottom of the braid and feel if the hair is nice and warm (but don’t burn it, obviously).
- Step 4: let it cool down completely (I usually do my makeup in the meantime) and then carefully open it up. Use a hardspray to set it and there you go: beautiful beach waves! It’s THAT simple.
Hope you love this look as much as I do and you can watch and read the tutorial on how to created this sun kissed makeup to go with it here!
